Generating Power and Enviromental Protection
- No Contradiction
Electricity itself is not emitting any harmful substances. But wherever fossil energy sources such as coal, gas or oil are combusted in order to generate energy, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxide, carbon dioxide and dust are generated. This is why we come up with a lot of ideas to ensure that conventionally generated power and environmental protection do not remain contrary to each other.
With the aid of progressive technology, E.ON Kraftwerke reduces the pollutants in all plants to an absolute minimum. And in the course of the years we have managed to continuously increase our power stations’ efficiency. This means: less emissions and considerate dealing with natural resources. The success is impressive. Today, we are able to generate twice as much electricity from one kilogram of hard coal than 50 years ago.
Nitrogen, dust and sulphur are removed from the power stations’ flue gas in three stages.
By simultaneously generating and using electricity and heat, it is possible to clearly increase the energy yield.
This is what the achievable plus in power station output that arises from an improved efficiency is called.
