Foundation stone laid for Malženice power plant

On October 6th the foundation stone of E.ON’s new eco-friendly, combined-cycle power plant has been laid in Malženice, Trnava region. The symbolic act has been carried out  by Ľubomír Jahnátek, Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Tibor Mikuš, Chairman of Trnava Higher Territorial Unit, Bernhard Fischer, Member of the Board of Directors of E.ON Energie AG, Konrad Kreuzer, Chairman of the Board of E.ON Slovensko and Rainer Hauenschild representing general contractor Siemens.

Preparatory earthworks for the new Malženice power plant began in October 2008 when all necessary licences had been secured. The installed capacity of the power plant will be gross 430 MWe. With an efficiency of 58 %, it will be one of the most technologically advanced, environmental friendly and energy efficient plants in Slovakia. Thanks to its cutting-edge technology, it will supply from 600,000 up to 900,000 households with reli-able and ecologically sound electricity. Operation of the power plant is expected to begin in the end of 2010. The investment creates 35 new permanent jobs and a lot more employment indirectly for services of all kinds, while several hundred new jobs are generated during the construction process. The electricity produced in Malženice will be transferred to the national power grid, making it available throughout Slovakia.

The Malženice power will play an important role in the country's energy security by providing an efficient addition to the national generation capacities while, at the same time, protecting the environment using state-of-the-art technology. The flexibility of the new power plant will ensure optimal electric energy supply.

„To be able to stick to a project like the Malzenice Power Plant amidst a global economic crisis is something special. For us, for the region and for Slovakia,” Bernhard Fischer, Member of the Board of Directors of E.ON Energie AG, said.

Throughout the construction process and as part of its good corporate citizen engagement and focus on environmental protection, E.ON pays special attention to the preservation of the environment of neighbouring Malženice and Trakovice by cooperating with local authorities and relevant stakeholders to minimise the ecological impact and renew the natural environment of the plant.
