Natural Gas

Environmentally friendly, quick and safe

Natural gas has already formed many million years ago. Source materials were dead organic substances that were covered in an airtight manner by rocks. Increasing pressure and higher temperatures led to chemical changes. More and more volatile ingredients were released from the interim products oil or coal, migrated upwards through cracks and pores in the rock formations and concentrated into gas reservoirs.

Only little CO2 is released during the combustion of natural gas, thus making this a highly environmentally friendly process. Another advantage is the quick availability of the output: gas turbine power stations are so-called quick starters. On the other hand, there are the high fuel costs in comparison to other types of power stations. In addition the supply of natural gas highly depends on imports from partly politically unstable countries.

For gas fired power stations, E.ON Kraftwerke places its trust in the combined cycle gas turbine technology (CCGT). Combined cycle power plants permit an improved used of the combustion heat, so that efficiencies of up to 60 percent are attained.
