Biomass
CO2-neutral and environmentally friendly
Whether as solid, liquid or gaseous biomass: the increased use of biomass provides for a lasting relief of our environment. Energy generation from biomass is to a large extent climate neutral: Every time only that much carbon dioxide is generated as the plants have assimilated during their growth.
The energy of biomass can be used in completely different manners. From solid biomass such as wood, straw or energy crops, heat that can be used to generate electricity is produced by means of combustion, gasification or pyrolisis. Already today, many of these processes are used on a larger scale.
Our biomass projects
We operate biomass combined heat and power plants at our power plant sites Landesbergen, Emden and Zolling. With an electrical power of 20 megawatts each, these biomass combined heat and power plants are able to supply 30,000 households with electricity and if necessary supply the region with district heating.
The CO2 that is released during the utilisation of biomass was beforehand bound during the organic growth process. The utilisation is thus CO2-neutral and environmentally friendly. In addition, biomass power stations create and secure jobs in the region. We are certain that our investment in biomass combined heat and power stations is an important step - both from a climate political and from a regional point of view.
Biomass combined heat and power stations differ fundamentally from coal fired power stations as far as logistics, combustion technology and also flue gas purification are concerned. They are specially designed to derive the highest possible energetic use from the precious biomass energy source, while simultaneously paying special attention to environmental protection regulations.
Which fuels are used?
The Biomass Directive regulates which substances are considered as biomass. As fuels we use matured timber as well as other biomass (green wood, straw, energy crops, driftwood, etc.) as additional fuel. Substances that may not be burned include matured timber that is contaminated with PCB and mercury, paper, cardboard, carton, peat, mud and similar substances.
