Growing Energy Requirement - Secure Supply?

Global Power Consumption

For years, the energy requirement has been growing not only in the traditional industrial nations. In particular economic growth countries like China influence this trend. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that up to the year 2030, the worldwide energy demand will continue to grow by 1.7 percent every year.

The demand is growing – but how does one ensure a reliable supply with electricity?

All energy sources will have to contribute in the years to come to cope with the growing power requirement. Only a balanced energy mix – thus the combination of different energy sources – will guarantee a safe and reliable power supply.

Fossil energies such as coal and gas will continue to be of central importance in this regard. According to expert estimates, the worldwide share of power generation on the basis of fossil energy sources will amount to 70 percent in the year 2030. Renewable energies would not be able to guarantee a constant supply in an economic manner.

For coal and gas to be able to fill this important role, it is necessary to upgrade the power station park and to develop new power station technologies.
