New Coal-fired Power Station in Stade
Plant to stand next to decommissioned nuclear power station
The nuclear power station in Stade was decommissioned at the end of 2003 and is currently being dismantled. But there is still a future in this long-time E.ON site: E.ON Kraftwerke are planning to build a bituminous coal-fired power station.
The permission for starting running this 1,000 megawatt station will be submitted by 2009. Rated at an efficiency of about 46 percent, the station will significantly top the average efficiency of German power stations (approximately 38 percent). That is to say: over 20 percent less CO2 will be output to produce the same amount of energy. Cutting-edge technology will also let the new station be ahead of its class in terms of flue gas purification.
The station will benefit from its site immediately at the Elbe in many ways. E.ON Kraftwerke own large premises in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear power station where the new station will be built. Coal carriers importing coal from all over the world can unload at the port directly in front of the power station and have the coal taken straight to storage. Another aspect is that there is cooling water in abundance: the Elbe supplies enough cooling water, so that there is no need for a large cooling tower.
