The New Combined Cycle Power Plant in the Italian Livorno Ferraris
Company
E.ON has been active in Italy since the end of the nineties both in trading and marketing of power and gas. Since the market liberalisation in Italy in the year 1999, E.ON Italia has been supplying major customers primarily with power, but also with gas and heat. E.ON Ruhrgas, Thüga Italia and E.ON Vendita supply industrial, wholesale and private customers in Italy with natural gas. Since 2001, E.ON is also represented on the Italian market with its own production company. E.ON Italia Produzione S.p.a. is a subsidiary of E.ON Kraftwerke. The company is currently building a modern combined cycle power plant in Livorno Ferraris. All Italian E.ON companies were merged into a new regional company - E.ON Italia - at the beginning of 2008.
Power market
Italy is the fourth largest power market in Europe and a market with attractive growth rates. Power generation capacities in Italy are however scarce and the existing Italian power station park has gone on in years. Many power stations have to be shut down and Italy has to depend on imported power. So as to cover the increasing power requirement and to reduce the dependence on imports, additional power station capacities are necessary. The Italian government therefore endeavours to advance the construction of power stations. The new power station in Livorno Ferraris is part of the comprehensive renewal of the Italian energy sector and will make an important contribution towards making the country’s power supply more secure.
Region
The site for the new power station is the municipality of Livorno Ferraris in Northern Italy. The major cities Milan and Turin are equally easy to reach from Livorno Ferraris. The town of Livorno Ferraris itself has approximately 4,400 inhabitants and is part of the Vercelli region in the Piedmont. An important line of industry in the region is rice cultivation. The new power station too is located amidst rice fields.
Power station
The foundation stone for the combined cycle power station in Livorno Ferraris was laid on 6th July 2006. Commissioning was in September 2008. The environmentally-friendly, highly-efficient power station with an electric output of 800 megawatts will then be generating approx. five million kilowatt hours of power per year. This quantity is sufficient to supply more than a million households with power. Approximately 40 jobs will be generated in Livorno Ferraris with the new power station. The investment amounts to roughly 400 million Euro.
