Coal-fired or Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT)

When constructing new power stations, E.ON Kraftwerke differentiates between gas-fired combined cycle power plants and power plants utilising the energy source hard coal. Both options hold advantages and disadvantages.

Combined cycle power plants
Advantages Disadvantages
  • High efficiencies
  • Increasing dependence on imports from a few, partly politically instable regions
  • Low investments
  • Instable fuel price
  • Fuel-induced low CO2 emissions
  • Necessary investments for upgrading the gas transport system

Hard coal fired power stations
Advantages Disadvantages
  • Potential to achieve an even higher efficiency
  • Higher CO2 emissions
  • Existing and long-term available fuel resources
  • Correspondingly higher investments
